Archbishop Demetrios upon receiving official notification of the election said: “ I congratulate Metropolitan-elect Evangelos, whom I have known for many years, initially as a student of our Holy Cross Theological School and then as a clergyman of our Archdiocese of America…I am sure that by the grace and strength from God, the new Metropolitan of New Jersey will prove to be a true imitator of our Good Shepherd Jesus Christ and will lead the devoted flock of his God-saved Metropolis to 'springs of living water'(Rev.7:17).” 

The Mega Minima (Formal Election Announcement) will be read at 4:00 p.m. on May 9 at the Archdiocesan Chapel of St. Paul. The enthronement of the first Metropolitan of New Jersey will take place at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 11 at the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian, Tenafly, NJ (353 East Clinton Avenue).   The new Metropolitan will celebrate his first Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday, May 11 at St. Demetrios Cathedral, Astoria, beginning with the Orthros at 8:00 a.m. and Liturgy at 9:30. He has been Dean of St. Demetrios Cathedral for the last two years.

Metropolitan-Elect Evangelos was unanimously elected by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on April 12, 2003, on the recommendation of the Eparchial Synod of the Archdiocese of America. 

Born in New York City in 1961 to immigrant parents from the Greek Island of Kalymnos, he attended the Greek American day schools of St. Eleftherios and St. Spyridon in New York City. He enrolled in Hellenic College (Brookline, MA), from which he graduated in 1983 and then continued his studies at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology graduating in 1986 with a Masters of Divinity degree.  In 1988 he attended the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey of the University of Geneva (Switzerland) from which he received a Certificate of Ecumenical Studies.

He was ordained to the diaconate February 1, 1987 and to the priesthood on July 30, 1989 by Bishop Philotheos of Meloa.  His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos elevated him to the rank of Archimandrite on March 30, 1991. He served as deacon to the Orthodox Center of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Chambessy, Geneva in 1987-88 and served as deacon to Archbishop Iakovos and Assistant Director of Archives of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in 1988-89. From August 1989 until September of 1993 he served as assistant priest to the Dean of St. Demetrios Cathedral, Astoria, NY.

He was subsequently named Chancellor of the Diocese of New Jersey, a position that he held until March 1999. He served as Director of the Registry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese from 1996 to 2001, and as President of the Spiritual Court for the Archdiocesan District from 1996 until the present.

In addition to his parents John and Magdalene, his immediate family includes his brothers Haralambos and Michael and their families.
