The Reverend Clergy
Esteemed Members of the Parish Councils and
Philoptochos Societies
Of the Greek Orthodox Communities of our Holy
Metropolis of New Jersey
Beloved in the Lord,
I pray that this letter finds all of you in an uplifted spirit as we
enter the second half of our Lenten Journey to Pascha.
It is with disbelief that one year has nearly passed since the
falling asleep of our most beloved and respected spiritual father and leader of
thirty seven years, Archbishop Iakovos.
The Hierarch and Archpriest who offered himself to the service of the
Church, our venerable Ecumenical Patriarchate and our Holy Archdiocese of North
and South America and who served God and His people with faith, honor and
dignity. His service to the Church was one of distinction, offering and
sacrifice, all being a result of his unwavering faith and devotion to our Holy
Orthodox Faith and our Hellenic principles, values and ideals of our origin,
culture and civilization.
On April 9, 2005, Archbishop Iakovos, former Primate of the Greek
Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America offered his spirit unto the
Lord. Yet, he continues to pray for his spiritual children, all of us from
Heaven above. For 37 years, he blessed and nurtured us in the Faith. Today, he
continues to beseech our Lord God on our behalf and for our salvation. The most
sincere expression of gratitude which we can offer in return is our personal and
heartfelt prayer beseeching our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ to grant repose to
the soul of His most worthy servant.
Therefore, with this Encyclical I am requesting that a One Year
Memorial Service in honor and commemoration of
Archbishop Iakovos of North and South
America be celebrated on Sunday, April 9, 2006, in the
Parishes of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey. Needless to say, a
tray of Kollyva should be prepared.
Thanking you in advance and joining
you as we chant, May his memory be eternal, I remain
With Paternal Love and Blessings,

†E V A N G E L O S
Metropolitan of New Jersey
